A contemporary dance piece based on Virginia Woolf's novel "The Waves". Using the themes and plot of Woolf's poetic prose as a guide, the piece follows the stories of each of the six central characters of the novel and how they navigate their lives through grief. Through sinuous and flowing movement, the dancers ebb and flow with the thematic existential pressure of life, and despite the differences in their personalities and storylines, the characters move in tandem with each other, embracing the tides of time. A deeply vulnerable and emotional work, "The Waves" celebrates the flow of life through the lens of doubt, grief, and human catharsis. Originally performed in Wilson Memorial Chapel, the work is performed in the round with the dancers looking directly at each of the audience members.
